04 / A simple approach
How to Put Together
an Outfit That Works
You don't need a completely new wardrobe to create different looks. Understanding a few simple styling details can help you combine the clothes you already own.
01Start With One Key Piece
Instead of choosing everything at once, begin with the item you want to wear.
If you're building an outfit around brown knee-high boots, start with straight-leg denim or a knitted dress. Then add a simple top and a jacket that suits the overall proportions.
For a barn jacket, try the opposite approach. Let the relaxed outerwear shape guide your choice of trousers and footwear. Straight-leg jeans and loafers keep the look casual, while tailored trousers can make it feel more polished.
Starting with one piece gives the rest of the outfit a clear direction.
02Balance Colour and Proportions
An outfit doesn't need perfectly matching colours to look put together.
Chocolate-brown boots can work with ivory knitwear and dark denim, while an olive jacket adds another complementary shade. Keeping the main clothing colours relatively simple gives different textures room to stand out.
Proportions matter just as much. If you're wearing wide-leg trousers, a shorter jacket can help define the waistline. With a long coat, consider how much of your trousers or boots remains visible.
The aim isn't to follow strict rules, but to understand how the pieces look together.
03Choose Layers for the Occasion
Before getting dressed, think about where you're going and how much time you'll spend outdoors.
For a casual day out, a lightweight knit, straight-leg jeans and a relaxed jacket may be enough. If the weather is cooler, add a longer coat or a warmer layer without changing the entire outfit.
For a smarter daytime look, replace casual trainers with ankle boots and choose a more structured jacket.
Consider comfort and movement too. A combination that looks good standing still should also feel practical when walking, sitting or commuting.
